Serving the Mt. Vernon community

For students looking to join any clubs at Mt.Vernon, the Service Learning Club is a relatively new club that is accepting members. This club provides a way to give back to the community.

The Service Learning Club president, Joe Shepard, 12, said, “I love it because it gives people an opportunity to give back.”

So far, the members have done four projects such as visiting a nursing home where the members of the club were able to play board games with the people living at the home. They also provided assistance in the MVHS Food Kitchen, where the club helped to organize and hand out food.

In addition to this, Service Learning helped gather supplies for animals in need last year. The most recent project consisted of the club joining with the VOICE and FCCLA clubs for the Waste Tobacco Filter Cleanup. For this project, the students walked around and helped to pick up tobacco filters found on the MVHS Campus.

The current project that is in progress is the Diaper Drive from September 5th through September 21st. Members promoted and helped to gather diapers for the drive which is meant to help babies and new mothers in need. They collected over 500 diapers during the drive.

This club helps people in our community and creates an opportunity to interact with others. The Service Learning Club is a way to help people get their hours for scholarships and NHS, but it also looks great on college transcripts.
