For some people, the goal of high school is to have fun and make friends. For others, the goal is to graduate and prepare for college. One thing that helps greatly with preparing for college is AP classes. AP stands for Advanced Placement. There are many reasons why AP classes help prepare students for college.
Firstly, AP classes skyrocket a student’s chances of getting into college. The admissions board wants to see students who show signs that they will succeed in college. According to the College Board, “85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.” AP classes can help students get to college more assuredly.
Another reason that AP classes benefit students is they help students prepare for college. AP classes are the equivalent of college-level classes, so students are getting a taste of what college is like before they actually get there. That greatly helps them to prepare and be mentally ready for the challenges they will experience in college.
Mrs. Bauchert, a history teacher at Mt. Vernon High School states that when she was in high school, AP classes helped students adapt to “the feeling of the pressure and getting used to that pressure, and getting used to those things.”
She also stated, “AP classes prepared me better to write better than any of my other classes.”
Her final statement about AP classes is that, “AP classes can be fun, people get afraid of the stress but stress builds community. Teachers know the classes are stressful, but they try to make it fun while teaching.”
In all, AP classes are very beneficial to a student and their education. They can help students reach college faster, while also preparing them for what is to come.
