With a new election coming up, politics has been the hot topic. There seems to be a whole lot of drama, and it can be hard to keep up with everything that has been happening.

One of the most recent developments with the political spectacle is the release, or leak, of about 20,000 emails linked to the Democratic National Committee, or the DNC. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairman for the DNC, is under fire due to the leak.

“Basically what people are trying to show when they leak them [the emails] is that the Democratic National Committee was Pro Hillary, Anti Bernie, [and they] didn’t give Bernie a fair shake,” said Mr. Carr, a U.S. History and Government teacher.

Bernie Sanders’ supporters already believed that the party favored Hillary Clinton because Sanders’ had supported Schultz’s opponent when she ran for Congress. The emails helped to support the accusation because they spoke of making Sanders look weak in the South due to his faith and defending Clinton against allegations made by Bernie’s campaign.

The DNC’s Secretary, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, told CNN that every officer in the DNC takes a pledge to stay neutral and if it is found that any of the officers went against that pledge, they will be held accountable. She does believe that opinions do not count as favoring one candidate. Rawlings-Blake denies that the DNC itself favored one candidate over the other.

“Now it’s coming to light… that Russian hackers are the people that got into the emails and they are releasing this information with the support of the Russian government because… the people in charge in Russia think that Hillary is going to continue on with certain sanctions that were put in place in previous administrations,”  Mr. Carr explained. “They feel as though Donald Trump… would lift the sanctions and that Hillary would not. The emails were leaked to hurt Hillary and to try to help Trump.”
