“My Year of Rest and Relaxation” review

Delainey Root, MVC Writer

My Year of Rest and Relaxation” is a novel by Ottessa Moshfegh. It was the writer’s second book and was published in 2018. The book is about an unnamed young woman and her use of the medication causing her to sleep for a year.

At first look the book might not sound very good and the bright pink cover may not appeal to the eye. But, I promise this book is amazing. “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” has a different input on mental health. Unlike many other books, the readers look into the brain of a woman without any apparent struggles. The woman is beautiful and knows that fact. She is also incredibly rich. Therefore, on the surface, it looks as though she has nothing to be upset about. The book looks into her feelings and shows her way of coping.

It is my favorite book. There is always the cliché “I could not put it down,” but I genuinely could not. There are so many relatable lines and interesting subject matters. It is a new and creative look into life. I personally found the comedic timing and also the writing of the sad moment amazing.

I recommend that anyone with an interest in the human condition and mental health read this book. It is so amazing and one of the best-written books I have ever laid my eyeballs on. I will recommend it to anyone who asks for a book recommendation and will stand by that. It is a relatively quick read and much worth the time.
