Baseball is considered America’s greatest pastime. After all, it has been around since the Mid-1800’s. Similarly, Cricket is another sport that is as widely known. One major similarity between the two sports is that both are bat and ball games. In order to score runs, players must use a bat to hit a ball into the outfield. There are many significant differences too.
Firstly, the fields are vastly different. Baseball fields range from 90,000 to 120,000 square feet and consist of four bases then grass area extending outwards. There is an infield and outfield. The infield consists of dirt paths, leading from base to base in a diamond formation.
The outfield consists of a grass area, extending from first base to third base. The pitcher’s mound is 60.5 feet from home plate, and the first and third bases are about ninety feet from home plate. The outfield can be between 290 feet to 400 from home plate to the fence.
In cricket, the field is a circle instead of a more rectangular shape. The square footage ranges from 450 to 50 feet. There are three parts of the field, including the outfield, the infield, and close-infield.
The close-infield has two, 15-yard wide, circles and in the middle, there is a dirt rectangle called the pitch which is 22 feet and 10 feet wide. It is where the batter and pitcher face off. The infield is bigger and is the shape of a school track lane. It has a radius of 30 feet. Finally, the outfield is a complete circle with a radius of 30 yards from the outer boundary line to the center pitch.
Next, the equipment and batting rules are different for both sports. In baseball, players use a rounded bat with a small barrel. In cricket, players use a flat-sided bat.
Baseball pitchers use overhand throws and aim downwards toward the catcher behind home plate. Cricket pitchers toss the ball up and bounce it on the pitch dirt.
There are no strikes in cricket. The ball has toppled into a pile of sticks behind the plate, called the wicket. When the wicket is hit, it means that the batter is out.
In baseball, the strike has to be down the middle and between the shoulders and knees of the player. Also, if the player swings at the ball but does not make contact, it is considered a strike. Also if a ball is hit on the right side of the first baseline or left of the third baseline, it is considered a strike. If this happens two times it means the player has two strikes but the third time it happens, they can keep swinging.
To score runs, in baseball, players hit the ball between the third and first baselines and run the bases from right to left. To get one run, batters have to complete the run and touch all four bases, including home plate.
In cricket, There are 2 batters on the field at once, standing on opposite sides of the pitch. Players hit the ball, hopefully towards the outfield, and run back and forth until they until the ball is caught or retrieved in the outfield and thrown in. One down-and-back is considered two runs. Once 5 pairs, or 10 players, have batted, the team doesn’t have any more available. When this happens, teams switch from batting to fielding, and vice versa.
There is a difference in the number of players and positions in each sport. In baseball, teams have nine people in the infield, the pitcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop who is posted between second and third plate and the catcher behind fourth or home plate. Then, in the outfield, there are three people, one in right field behind first base, the centerfielder who plays behind second base and the left fielder who plays behind the shortstop.
In cricket, the positions are split to off-side, for right handed players, and leg side or on side, for left handed people.
The wicket keeper stands behind the batter, protecting the wicket. The wicket is a pile of three stumps, wooden posts and two bails which are wooden beads that cross on top of the stumps. The wicket keeper’s job is to protect the wicket, just like the name says. The bowler, who is basically the pitcher, aims to knock over the stump to get the batter out.
Players that play close to the pitch on the off-side, are called slips. They play like a baseman and are the first line defense for speedy catches.
The gully is the person, kind of like a shortshop, who takes hard hit balls. This position is stationed next to the slips.
The cover is located on the off-side and blocks straight shots into the field. The point plays a right angle on the off side and their purpose is to stop balls that are hit short.
The mid-on and mid-off positions are placed by the wicket, preventing shots aimed at it. The m-wicket, or square leg, plays on the right or on side and stops shots aimed over there.
Finally, the third man or fine leg is played on the boundary line behind the wicket and has to save the ball. They are needed to hinder the batters from scoring runs.
Cricket and baseball are vastly different. Even so, baseball originated from cricket and there are noticeable similarities between the two sports. Both sports have a large fan base. Baseball is most common in America and the Caribbean, while cricket is most popular in South Asia and the United Kingdom. Whether it is the southern or northern hemisphere, each sport is fascinating and widely loved.
