On Monday, April 3, I went on a college visit to Marian University in downtown Indianapolis. There I was given a tour of the campus and an information based presentation about the majors, programs and what it would be like attending Marian.
Marian University is a private Catholic University–the only Catholic University in Indianapolis according to their website. There are 5,100 students, including 4,000 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students, earning degrees in the arts, business, education, engineering, math, medicine, nursing, ministry and the natural and physical sciences. Marian labels themselves as a liberal arts university wanting to transform their students into today’s leaders.
Marian’s campus is small and felt like I was getting that one-on-one experience.
There were five other kids on the tour, which was very different from 50-100 people attending other campus tours like Ball State or IU. Out of the five students in my group, I was the only one interested in nursing, but before the tour even started, I got to have a personal talk with the woman doing the presentation and she offered me some information and asked if I was interested in getting a personal tour of the nursing building, seeing the labs and meeting a professor working at Marian. After the presentation, everyone went on a personal tour of the campus with a student that has a similar major, interest or goals. These personalized tours gave everyone a chance to get real answers to their questions.
My tour guide was a sophomore who was majoring in nursing. She was very nice, helpful and went into a lot of detail of student life, majoring in nursing and her own experiences. We even got to talk about just personal stuff like where we were from just getting to know each other.
I got to see classroom size and go into different major buildings. I got to learn about the history and philosophy of Marian.
All together I thought the campus was very nice, and the tour was informational.
Then after the tour with the nursing major, I got the personal tour of the lab and classes in the nursing building. I thought it was a great experience and it convinced me that nursing is what I want to do in the future by how enchanted I was by seeing the lab. The lab is set up like a hospital and has a robot patient who could breathe like a human, blink and even move its mouth.
It was also nice to meet the professors as well. Getting to know them helped me have an idea of what my classes will be like.
All together, I thought it was a great experience and I loved so many things about Marian.
