Bringing Ska music to the mainstream, Sublime broke records and made headlines with their reggae-punk fusion. Coming from the poor neighborhoods of California, Sublime formed out of pure passion for life and music. Even though they were successful with five platinum albums, the band’s life was short-lived. They only made music from 1988 to 1996.
Like lots of bands during the time, drugs and violence were a common occurrence within Sublime’s members. The band lost their lead singer, Bradely Norwell, when he overdosed in 1996. Shortly after his death, Sublime released their last album, “Sublime.”
After the death of Norwel, the band went on a definite hiatus, only coming back for re-releases and compilations. In 2009, Sublime came off hiatus with a new singer. Rome Ramirez joined the band and began a new legacy for Sublime. Up until 2024, Sublime played with Ramirez to varying success. The newfound singer was met with heavy criticism and the band never reached the same success as with Norwell.
Sublime was stuck in this state of limbo up until 2025. Fans were riled up with the announcement that there would be a new singer to replace Ramirez. Bradley Norwell’s only child, Jakob Norwell, took on the mantle of lead singer.
Fans were exhilarated with this announcement and it seemed the band would finally escape its stagnant state. Having a familiar face in the band gave fans hope. A young, energetic vibe was brought to the band. That same summer, Sublime released their first original song in years. “Ensenada” was their first release with Jakob Norwell as singer and immediately made headlines. The song jumped to the top of streaming charts and got a pretty nice spot on radio stations.
This new revival for Sublime is predicted to bring the band back to the mainstream of alternative rock. Jakob Norwell along with the rest of the Sublime have claimed to be working on new music and have plans to release more along the way.
