The 2004 independent movie “Napoleon Dynamite,” directed by Jared Hess, is one of the best, if not one of the more offbeat movies of its kind. Its plot and comedy sets it apart from its contemporaries and other movies, while also being relatable to a larger audience.
One thing that is very enjoyable about this movie is the fact that there are no objectively unlikeable characters. Some characters have unlikeable aspects to them, but still have redeemable qualities and do not act out of spite or malice.
For example, one of the characters, Don, is framed as a sort of bully archetype. However, when Napoleon’s actions towards him are taken into account, it is easy to see why Don scoffs at and does not take Napoleon seriously. Even though he is the protagonist, Napoleon is awkward, rude and sometimes aloof. When these qualities are taken into account, the reaction of the bully-type character is completely justified and more realistic to how a regular person would react to Napoleon’s behavior.
The character of Pedro Sanchez is also a character that is genius in his simplicity. Pedro is a new student and resident in Napoleon’s hometown of Preston, Idaho and barely has any dialogue as he does not know much English. When he does speak, it is often in simple phrases or sentences, however all of his statements are delivered in a deadpan way while still coming across as thoughtful and earnest. Despite not knowing much about the language or culture of his new environment, Pedro is ambitious and asks out girls for the school dance, and later even campaigns for class president.
Another very good aspect of the movie is the plot, or rather lack thereof. The town of Preston is located in rural Idaho, so there is not much to do or many outside forces driving the plot. “Napoleon Dynamite” shines through in this element, as it depicts the mundanity of small town life in an entertaining, endearing, and often comedic way.
While not the most conventional, the movie succeeds in its comedy as well. Many jokes are delivered in the way that characters react to situations or simply their behavior. Even though there is not much to do in the town of Preston, the way the characters engage in mundane everyday tasks is extremely comedic and entertaining.
Napoleon Dynamite is a movie that is not made for everyone, but can still be easily viewed and enjoyed by a large audience. For some it may simply be a fun, enjoyable comedy movie, however those who resonate with its characters and comedy will find a deeper appreciation for this movie. I greatly enjoy “Napoleon Dynamite” and feel that it is a great success on multiple levels.
