Spring season brings a bundle of new sports for athletes to participate in. These spring sports at MV include baseball, softball, tennis and track and field. However, out of all these sports, track and field contains the highest number of athletes during the spring.
The girls’ and boys’ team together contain more than 150 athletes. There are 17 coaches that give their time to provide support. Many of the coaches are volunteers.
Coach Palmer is still allowing students to join, no matter their level of athleticism. There is always the possibility of improving if the athlete is willing to put the work in.
A common misconception with track is that everyone is required to run to do the sport, this is not necessarily true. Running is a large part of track, but it is called track and field for a reason. Field events include shotput, discus, high jump, long jump and pole vault. There are so many opportunities in track, which is one reason why it is so inclusive.
Confidence is a big part of athletics in general, and this is very true with track. It is not just confidence in ability, but also confidence in the fact that hard work leads to improvement.
In regards to team achievements, the boys’ track team won the Hancock County championship for the fifth year in a row in 2025. They also won the Hoosier Heritage Conference for the fifth year in a row. Overall, the boys had a successful season with multiple record breaking times recorded throughout the season.
As for the girls’ team, in 2025 they took home the Hoosier Heritage conference title for the second year in a row. The girls’ team also had a strong season with many records broken and two athletes attending the Indiana state championships.
The track and field team is a welcoming team that gives athletes a chance to develop and showcase their skills. The Mt. Vernon’s team continues to form a strong community between athletes, coaches and schools across Indiana.
