Perming is a chemical treatment that reforms the structure of hair to create curls, waves or to add volume. This perming normally lasts around three to six months. It can be done at home or in a salon.
The first step is washing the hair. This removes oils and dampens the hair which will later allow the perming solution to properly penetrate the hair. After shampooing is finished the hair needs to be sectioned. This is crucial for even and consistent results.
Following that process, the hair will be wrapped around rods. The size of these rods will differ depending on the size of curls wanted. In order to wrap the hair around the rods, end paper gets applied to the ends of the hair and wettened. For shorter hair, it is better to apply clips around the rods so they stay secure.
Once all of this is done, the hair is ready for the perming solution to be applied. This solution needs to sit on the hair for 15-30 minutes. For tighter and more defined curls, let the solution sit longer. Next, rinse the hair for a minimum of five minutes, before applying the neutralizer, rinsing and removing the rods.
After all of those steps have been completed, the permed hair cannot be washed for 48 hours. If it is washed, the hair does not have a chance to fully rebond.
Finally, following this wait time, the hair just needs to be carefully handled to prevent damage, since this is when the hair is in its most fragile state.
