As of right now, the Indiana House is currently looking at a bill that would pass a statewide youth social media ban. However, they are reviewing at an alternative law that would place more restrictions on youth under the age of 16 who are active on social media rather than a full and outright ban. The proposed amendment would add new language that would limit the collection of data from minors and cut off algorithms described as addictive that particularly target children under 16.
The House’s proposal is to introduce new regulations on social media apps that affect how those platforms are able to interact with underaged persons. Said apps would be required to use age-estimation services to determine how old a user is and have to continue through the platform that way.
More rights would also be put in the parents’ hands. They would be offered monitoring tools to survey their child’s social media accounts. The amendment’s goal is to also prohibit media companies from exploiting Hoosier child data that is used to target children’s algorithms.
