The standard Rubik’s Cube is a three by three. It is named this because in math terms three times three is nine and on each side of the cube there are nine squares. Each side of the cube has a different color. The colors are red, blue, green, white, yellow and orange.
What if there was a cube with more than these just six colors? What if there is a cube with more than six sides and nine squares? There are all kinds of cubes. Some have more colors with more sides and some with less.
For example, the Mastermorphix has fewer sides and colors. There are only four sides to this shape, making it a pyramid. However, the edges of the pyramid curve to make a more bubbly shape. These sides have 11 triangles on each side. The colors for the generic Mastermorphix are teal, red, yellow and green.
A pyramid cube that is similar to the Mastermorphix is the Pyramink. The difference between the Pyramink and the Mastermorphix is that the Pyramink is much flatter, so it is able to sit on a flat surface, such as a table, without rolling off. Just like the standard Rubrik’s Cube, the Pyramink also has nine shapes on each side, except the Pyramink has triangles to turn instead of squares.
These two puzzles sound pretty complicated, but it does not get any easier from there. The Megaminx is a dodecahedron which means it is a 12 sided shape. To make this cube even more complex, on each side there are 11 shapes. Some of these shapes are thin triangles that make up a star in the center of each side and other shapes are squares for the corners. The 12 colors to a Megaminx are red, white, purple, blue, green, tan, pink, yellow, grey, lime green and dark blue.
The same triangles in the Megaminx can also be found on a cube called Square 1. From afar, Square 1 looks like a normal cube, but when a closer look is taken, it is quite extraordinary. It is known as the shape-shifting cube because of its interchangeable, sliced pieces.
Last, but not least, is the Skewb. A Skewb has a normal shape of a cube, but the center is a diamond shape leaving four remaining corners left. The colors of the Skewb and Square 1 are green, white, orange, blue, yellow and red.
With all these different puzzles to try, there are endless opportunities to explore a new hobby.
