The Netflix original, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” is a film that revolves around a murder of Prentice Jefferson Wicks, played by Josh Brolin. Wicks’ death happens in the middle of assistant pastor Jud Duplenticy’s sermon. There are only 7 people in the church listening to this sermon.
These 7 people are Wick’s closest friends and family. They are the only people in the church because in the past a few of Wick’s sermons have been excuses to target people to make them feel guilty about their sins.
Some of the observers assumed that it was the priest who killed Wicks because Jud was the only one who could see him in the secret room. As all 7 observers piled into the doorway, they saw a dead body stabbed in the back with a sword. The sword had a red devil’s head on the top.
After the devastating, yet mysterious death of Wicks, they bury the body in a mausoleum.
A day later a detective comes along to investigate the murder, trying to solve which one of the observers could have possibly killed Wicks. Priest Jud and detective Benoit Blanc retrace footsteps of all the observers. They gather clues about the devil head, Wicks closest friends and family, and even haunted history about the church itself.
This movie revolves around the biblical story of Lazarus, which is why the title of this movie is “Wake Up Dead Man.”
In the Bible, the story of Lazarus is about a man, who died but rose from the dead four days later. The same happened in the movie with Wicks.
Now the detective has two crimes to solve, who murdered Wicks and how did he rise from the dead?
I highly recommended this movie and the rest of the series. This movie kept me engaged. It has so many different plot twists that made me think one person was the murderer when really it was a whole entirely different person. Anyone who enjoys watching mysteries will definitely like this one.
