“Would you rather” questions have sparked many debates. Would one like speed or invisibility? Or would they fight 100 duck sized horses, or 100 horse sized ducks? But the most commonly asked question: which is better, dogs or cats? So which one is actually truly the better one?
Dogs are fluffy creatures that are commonly seen as close companions who love to play fetch as well as beg for food that is not healthy for them. Depending on the breed, they can even guard a home. Some downside to dogs are that they can also be noisy and hard to take care of. Dogs require walks, open grassy front and backyards and take time to train when they are young puppies. Puppies also cannot be left alone for extended periods of time.
Cats are seen as more calm and collected creatures. Cats, due to their small size, are usually more affordable. On the contrary to the positives, cats are commonly used as emotional support animals and are not seen as needy as dogs can be.
Some similarities between the two species are the facts that they both shed. Shedding animals leave hair everywhere, attaching to clothing and getting into food, which can be hard to manage. The two also have strong body language signs. For example, the way a dog wags its tail shows if it is happy, nervous or excited. The way a cat will tilt its head in a way and its scruff will stand up if it feels threatened, as well as its tail indicating its emotions.
Students at Mt Vernon responded to the argument: 23 votes for cats, 20 votes for dogs and six votes for both pets. It could be the case that many of these voters only have the pet that they voted for.
Either way, there is no correct choice. Both pets have their pros and cons, and both species can be wonderful friends for anyone.
