“Not charity, but a chance,” is the motto set by the Goodwill company. They want to help people buy clothes and furniture at a lower rate than at the racks.
Goodwill Industries International was founded in 1902 by Edgar Helms in Boston. The company was originally for the poor and unemployed for collecting items, repairing them and then giving them out to the people that needed it helping their community.
In the current day, the company is a nonprofit organization that takes donations and sells them. There are many different kinds of Goodwill store one can go to. There are the racks and then the bins.
The racks are stores that are more sorted through. They take in donations, sort through the bags, and the things they keep, they put onto the racks. Many things can be found here such as CDs, clothes, books, and furniture. At the racks, everything seems neater; they are placed and hung on the racks, and the clothes have a set price tag to it. Items that have a higher base value will be priced higher at the racks.
The bins are technically labeled as the Goodwill outlet. At the outlet, they take in donations like the racks, but then they dump them into giant bins that are then wheeled out to be picked through by the customers.
At the bins, the bags and boxes they receive go straight to the bins. There is no sorting of any items.
What also is different on the bins is the pricing at the racks is based on the tag, at the bins it is based on weights. At the checkout there are scales both on the floor and on the counter. Each store will have a price per pound. That price is then multiplied by the weight of the items the customer buys.
The bins and racks are under the same company while still being so different. The bins are becoming more and more popular as people start to see the fun in hunting for their clothes rather than just grabbing them off of a rack.
