There is an age old question asked: what is a person’s favorite color? Colors are everywhere. But why do people like these colors? Is there a pattern?
What is the most common favorite color? Crayola, a crayon brand, went through a global vote to figure out this answer and found out blue was the global favorite.
Why is that so? Why do so many people like blue? America’s top three favorite colors are Cerulean, Robin’s Egg Blue and Wisteria. Canada’s top three are Cerulean, Robin’s Egg Blue and Wild Strawberry. Mexico’s are Lavender, Turquoise Blue and Wisteria. There are a few more countries, and the pattern remains the same: blue shades are the favorite type. Note how it is shades, not the actual color itself.
When people think of a specific color, blue being this example, they think of a branch of the color, like Robin Egg or Cerulean.
Another noticeable pattern is that people favor cooler colors. Sure, blue is a global favorite, but from students at Mount Vernon, the vote is quite different. Juniors Emma Vaughn and Thia Eichelberger like purple.
Eichelberger said that she loves purple, “Because there are so many pretty shades.”
Junior Olivia Rhoad’s favorite colors are burgundy and maroon, and to finish it all off, junior Adriana Worlds’ favorite color is midnight blue, “Because it looks good on me and it’s really pretty.”
Purples, blues and greens are called cool colors and are by far more popular than any other colors. The reason why people like cool colors is the same way people like the ocean or the forest. Greens and blues are common colors in nature and can be seen as calming. These colors commonly represent cleanliness such as an open sky or lush hill on a sunny day.
Colors such as yellow, orange or red are usually brighter and more energetic, and to some people, that can be too much.
There is no right or wrong answer to the color a person likes. Any color is seen as beautiful by at least someone.
