Zohran Mamdani, the new mayor of New York City, was recently elected with around 50 percent of the vote. He is a member of the Democratic Socialist party, and will also be New York City’s first Muslim mayor. He won against political opponents Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani has promised several things for NYC in his campaign. A few of those things are be fare-free buses, freezing rent, providing free childcare, raising the minimum wage and placing higher taxes on wealthier individuals and large corporations to lower the high cost of living in NYC.
Public opinion of Mamdani varies. Around 49 percent of NYC citizens say they do not want him to be mayor. On Veteran’s day, he handed out hot meals for veterans forgotten by the city, but people condemn him for not attending the Veteran’s Day parade, which has been attended by previous NYC mayors.
Many fear that Mamdani might also be a communist. President Trump has called Mamdani a member of the Communist party, and has threatened to cut NYC’s federal funding as a result. Mamdani’s political opponent, Cuomo, has also warned citizens that his socialism could be a very dangerous weapon wielded against the city.
However, his ideas truly resonated with the younger population in NYC. Mamdani is a younger candidate, one of the youngest mayoral elects in several years, and appears frequently on social media, making him appealing to first-time voters. Offering to build a more affordable NYC has also enticed the younger generation to vote for Mamdani.
New Yorkers will have to find out what Mamdani will bring to their city in the next few months.
