“Glee” is a show that tells the tales of a group of show choir kids. It mainly focuses on Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele. It follows her and her fellow students through their years at McKinley High School and after graduation.
This show portrays the struggles and delights of high school, including friendships, identity, and acceptance. It originally aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015. The creators are Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan. It is best described as a musical comedy drama.
“Glee” really focused on having a diverse cast. Rachel is bold and very ambitious. Many people do not like her as a character due to this. Chris Colfer plays Kurt Hummel, the only openly gay guy at the high school during the earlier seasons. He deals with severe bullying and how to overcome it.
Jane Lynch plays Sue Sylvester, the seemingly heartless cheer coach. Sue, however, does show moments of vulnerability at times, which makes her lovable to many, like when she stands up for Kurt when he is being bullied.
Another memorable character of the show is Finn Hudson, played by Cory Monteith, who unfortunately passed away in 2013, right before season five.
The episode after Monteith passed was one of the saddest episodes of the show. It brought many viewers to tears after Santana’s singing of “If I Die Young.” She truly showed her acting talents during this part, however many people believe her running out was not scripted.
The writing of the show was very humorous and satirical, mixed with meaningful moments between the characters. The later episodes struggle with pacing and unrealistic story lines; however, it is still a show people love to this day. The talent of the cast and choreographers brought Broadway-level talent into a network TV show.
My personal opinion of “Glee” is that it was a little over the top at times, but completely unforgettable. It is the type of show people want to watch over and over again.
The soundtrack was something I listened to every day without fail. There is a large variety of songs for everyone’s musical taste.
The first season was a bit too over the top for my taste personally, but the rest of the show makes up for it. If one enjoys witty humor mixed with serious moments and songs, and dancing that will always be stuck in their heads, “Glee” is the show for them. The show is good, but it is an acquired taste. Overall, I would rate it a 7 out of 10.
The diverse casting makes the show even better. It is a show I will never forget.
