The Lewisburg Haunted Cave is a haunted cave in Preble County, Ohio, that is best known for its cave location and bat population. I visited it in November with my girlfriend and my family, and we all had a pretty good time.
I think the main components of a haunted house are having a good location, having good room designs, and having scary actors that are both frightening and human. So these are the guidelines I will use when reviewing this haunted cave.
Starting with the most important part: location. The haunted house is underground. The Lewisburg Haunted Cave takes place 80 feet underground in a real, mined cave. It is over a mile long and takes approximately an hour to complete. This has its pros and cons, but I honestly found it really enjoyable. Due to the rocky ground, it is fairly easy to fall or trip, and sometimes the line can feel steep and unsafe. However, after the line, during the experience, it is a really unique and fun atmosphere, especially for a haunted house.
The room designs were all fun and captivating, but lacked a consistent theme. For example, we went from a room with Jason masks to a bright, hypnotic bridge illusion. There was also a mirror maze room, a chainsaw room and a room with the devil. Every room was something new and exciting, but I left sort of confused and overwhelmed.
The actors were really good. They took their job seriously and committed to scaring the guests, but were still human and respectful. We did not get touched or grabbed, and they kept a good enough distance to establish a boundary, but still scare us. My girlfriend was pretty freaked out at the beginning, and one of the actors broke character to make sure she was okay and still wanted to go through the cave. This means an A+ for the actors in my book.
Overall, visiting the Lewisburg Haunted Cave is a pretty good choice, especially for the people who live nearby. I would give it an eight out of ten, because I really liked the cave location and respectfulness of the actors, but the room designs could use some work in being consistent.
