In the summer of 2025, the “Happy Gilmore 2” movie was released, and it was one of the best movies of the entire year. It is packed with comedy, heartwarming moments and nostalgia.
The movie explains how Happy Gilmore quit golfing after accidentally killing his wife, Virginia, leading him to throw away his clubs and fall into the grasp of alcoholism. Gilmore’s daughter, Vienna, becomes heavily passionate about dancing.
However, a problem arises. In order for her to go to a high-class dance school, Happy needs a lot of money which he does not have. To pay for her college, he starts up golfing again to try out some tournaments.
He later learns that there is a team, the Maxi League, who play with their own set of unique rules. Their goal is to try and make the game more exciting with players who can hit farther, fireworks shoot off throughout the course and 1,000 yard drives are required to get onto the fairway. To stop these unethical players, Gilmore and a few other Professional Golfer Association members, or PGA, members work together to try and save traditional golf by playing against the Maxi League.
The movie is truly nostalgic, bringing back hilarious characters from the first movie, like Hal L., Chubbs and the iconic Shooter McGavin.
The move also featured some camos with PGA players such as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jack Nicklus, Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele. Will Zalatoris also appears, playing the role as the older version of the Waterbury caddy from the first movie.
Many other famous people make cameos like Travis Kelce, Eminem, Post Malone and Ken Jennings, making it a lot of fun to try and find them all.
Just like the first movie, the second is full of shocking moments and unexpected jokes. One of my favorites was when Scottie Scheffler was getting arrested, he mumbled, “Not again,” referencing the 2024 PGA Championship when he was pulled over and arrested before the second round of the tournament.
As a golfer myself, this really was super enjoyable to watch, mainly due to the fact that the entire movie is about keeping the authenticity of golf as a sport. Golf is not just about who can hit the farthest. It is a game about strategy, mental battles and a whole lot of pushing through bad shots to move onto the next one. It is a game to socialize and have fun, not just as a competition. Sports do not have to have fireworks and crazy layouts to be fun.
Overall, I give this movie a 10 out of 10. It is packed to the brim with comedy, heartwarming moments and unexpected twists.
