Radical unschooling, or child-led learning, is parents’ relatively new alternative approach to education that diverges from the traditional school system and its structured curriculum. Instead of students having a set and structured curriculum and school day, the child’s learning is guided primarily by their interests and curiosity. This new teaching idea stems from the homeschooling movement, but it removes almost all adult-directed structure.
According to TikTok content creator Mami Onami, “We don’t teach our children anything; everything that they learn is in response to either their interests or their questions. We have no curriculum.”
Similarly, another TikToker, Alias Hebral, an unschooling parent, explained, “As an unschooling mom, I feel that there’s nothing more that I want my kids to know than that they are literally creating their reality.”
This method of schooling places trust in children’s innate curiosity, rather than the school’s external requirements. For instance, a child naturally interested in animals might ask for lessons in biology without ever being in a formal classroom.
Followers of radical unschooling argue that unschooling allows children to develop independence and skills on their own terms. Some critics, however, question whether unschooling provides enough structure to prepare students for future academic and professional endeavors.
For some moderates, radical unschooling shows a need for a change in what they see as the outdated school system. Whether one agrees with radical unschooling or not, the rise of parents participating in this trend possibly highlights a desire to rethink how children learn best.
