Are you a Mount Vernon student looking for a way to increase your strength? Searching for a way to increase your athletic ability for the sport you play? Just looking to stay fit? The MVHS Athletic weights program may be the place for you.
The current coach in charge of weight room activities is Coach Barrett who “loves being in the weight room and working with athletes.” He forms the workout plans and guides those who do use the weight room throughout the day.
Mount Vernon currently has two times outside of school and three times during school to use the weight room with instruction from a coach. In-class weights include first, second and third block classes. Weight lifting during this time lasts for the full hour and a half block. There is a scheduled plan for these in-school class periods. These plans go along with sports schedules. The workouts can be easier or harder depending on when an athlete has a gameday or not.
Before and after-school weight training is available throughout the week as well. Morning weights occur from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m everyday before school. After school weights commences on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. The plans for these times in the weight room depend on the athlete’s game schedule as well. There are many good opportunities to fit a particular time into a schedule to go into the weight room.
As an athlete, finding time to go to the weight room is incredibly beneficial. Coach Barrett states that all sports should lift weights as it can greatly improve an athlete in the long run. Weight lifting improves speed and strength and increases performance. It supports the development of the mind and the body. Teaching oneself to work through pain and push the body is so beneficial for an increase in ability.
The MVHS Athletic weights program introduces a way for athletes to better themselves both in their sport of choice and in their day to day lifestyle. Weights are always an option and it is easy to join. More information can be found on the Mount Vernon website or by contacting a counselor and Coach Barrett.
