There are many odd sports that have been invented: bossaball, cheeserolling, and toe wrestling, to name a few, but has anyone ever heard of chess boxing?
Chess boxing is a combination of the classic game of chess and the sport of boxing. Two competitors, each sitting on opposite sides of a chess board, are located inside a traditional boxing ring. Players take alternating turns, 3 minutes each, starting with chess, taking a one minute break, and then moving into the boxing round. They do this back and forth for a total of six rounds of chess and five rounds of boxing.
A winner is declared when either someone declares a checkmate or performs a knockout on their opponent. If a player breaks one of the rules, that player is disqualified and the opposing person is the winner.
There is a chess boxing organization called the World Chess Boxing Organization, located in Berlin, founded in 2003. Chess Boxing Global Marketing is another organization dedicated to the sport. In 2013, they officially established the world chess boxing championships.
Currently, chess boxing is not a very well-known sport in the United States, but is more commonly played in places like Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, and India.
