On October 21, 2022, Taylor Swift released her tenth studio album named “Midnights.” This was just two years after she released the twin albums “Folklore” and “Evermore.” Midnights got 184 million listens in its first day of release. When it came out, it made number one on the Billboard Top 200 charts. This marked her 11th time making it to the number one spot. On the original album, it had 13 songs. With the release of the “3 am” edition, which is like a deluxe version, it added seven extra songs, making it 20.
“Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” is track 19 and is not featured on the original album. This song talks about how when Swift was younger, she made some personal and relationship choices that were not ideal. This is told through lyrics like “Memories feel like weapons” and “I regret you all the time.” This is theorized to be talking about her relationship with John Mayer because of the lyrics, “Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first.” People also speculate that since it is track 19, it represents Taylor’s age when she dated Mayer. Out of this whole album, this has to be my favorite song just because of how deep the lyrics are.
Track five is “You’re On Your Own Kid.” This song talks about how she is officially on her own, although she has already been independent her whole life. This is highlighted when she sings, “You’re on your kid. You always have been.” To me this song symbolizes becoming an adult even for people who feel they’ve been on their own their entire lives. It might be the main message I get, but everyone may not get the same message I do.
“Mastermind” is track 13 on Midnights. This song describes Swift planning to win someone over and date them. It shows the complexity of trying to get someone and plotting against them. This song doesn’t seem to be about anyone specifically, but it is possible it is about a past love interest. Overall, this is definitely one of the more notable songs on the album and is one of my personal favorites.
Overall, this album is one of her best. According to Spotify It is her most listened to album. This album also sent her on her almost two-year tour called “The Eras” tour, which was her biggest tour of all time.
