Recently, a new trend is going around the internet. This new challenge is called the “USC Ice Bucket Challenge.” This challenge started at the University of South Carolina and is trying to raise awareness for mental health. The new challenge is in honor of a student who attended USC who took their life due to mental health issues.
The challenge is just like the old ice bucket challenge, which raised awareness for ALS, a degenerative disease that breaks down a person’s body until it can no longer function. This time the challenge is back to raise awareness for mental health.
Participants in this challenge get a bucket or a bowl and fill it up with water and ice. They film themselves pouring it over their heads once the water is ice cold. Once they post the video, they then tag 3-5 friends in hopes they will also take the challenge. This makes it easier for the challenge to spread and for people to see it, which raises awareness of mental health issues.
Since this challenge has come out, thousands of people have sent their videos to USC. It has gotten lots of recognition and has ultimately raised awareness for the cause that they are fighting for based on statements from the USC Instagram page.
