Jisoo, iconic singer and member of the global girl group BLACKPINK released her first mini album, “Amortage,” on Feb. 14.
The tracks reflect the meaning of the title, “Amortage,” being a combination of the words love and montage. Each song focuses on different stages of a relationship, as well as the ups and downs faced throughout.
The first track, “Earthquake,” is about all of the feelings that come with falling in love for the first time. The lyrics are a mix of both Korean and English, which sounded fine in the song, but when translated, sound a little silly. I thought that the beginning of the song was a little funky and not the most attention-grabbing, but once Jisoo gets into the verse, it becomes easier to listen to. The main chorus of the song is different, but in a fun way. Of all her songs, I think that “Earthquake” is the most K-pop -inspired song, and it has some great qualities. I would probably give it three out of five stars.
In the second track, “Your Love,” the lyrics express the deep and romantic love the singer feels. This song gave a very summery feel-good vibe, with the synthetic beats and instrumentals and was overall an enjoyable listen. This song shows the power of love and draws listeners in with its comforting message. I would say this song is my favorite from this album because it can be enjoyed by a wide range of people.
The third track, “Tears,” is a more upbeat song with sadder lyrics. The lyrics reflect the emotions of leaving a relationship behind. Although the beats used would make many think this is a song about something happy, when mixed with the lyrics, the track has an almost punk rock sound. I really liked this song and it is unique and unlike other songs I have heard before. I do not think that this song is for everyone, but I would recommend it to those who enjoy bubblegum pop-like tunes.
The last track, “Hugs & Kisses,” captures the feelings of heartbreak and moving on from it. This song is very liberating and inspiring. The lyrics showcase the singer’s determination not to let her heartbreak get the best of her and move on while also finding her strength. I liked the track used for this song and Jisoo’s vocals showcased her versatility. Overall, I found this song very sassy and fun to listen to, but it is not something that I would put on repeat.
“Amortage” was something very different than what I usually listen to, but I am glad that I did listen. I believe that it is a good mix of pop and K-pop and suits Jisoo and her vocals very well. I would recommend this to people who want a good place to start when listening to K-pop or anyone who is looking for a good playlist to blast on a warm summer night.
