Many executive orders have been written under the presidency of Donald Trump. One of them is the Jan. 20 order “Protecting the Meaning and Value of Birthright Citizenship.”
This order means that despite being born in the United States, children or adults whose parents are not legally American citizens cannot reside in the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, have been tracking down and deporting people who are in the United States without proper documentation. The goal of this order is to allow only American citizens in the United States, as some people consider others “alien” or “dangerous” to the country.
The problem with this order is that people are being deported to other countries that they have left for various reasons. Some reasons include violence, civil war, and unequal opportunity. Sending these people back to these countries puts them in the same situations, and it leaves them stuck with no idea what to do. In some cases, people of certain heritage are being deported to their so-called “home” countries, even if they have never lived in these countries before.
Though many support this order, courts have also blocked the order. Some see it as a violation of the 14th Amendment, which states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
