The Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida, is home to a variety of sea creatures. Along with ocean animals, the building also functions as a research lab. It is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1955 by Eugiene Clark. The building is open every day of the week from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Some animals the aquarium holds include sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, birds, otters and alligators. Visitors can see them in their enclosures throughout the building and even interact with some of them. There are also a variety of sea creatures that many would not regularly be able to see. Some of these include pufferfish and manatees. As visitors walk through the aquarium, they can learn more about the animals housed there. Similar to many other wildlife enclosures, information about the species is shown on the walls near the animals’ tanks. The building is split into multiple sections. Some are indoors while others are outside. The otters and birds are kept in tanks that are outdoors. There are also multiple tanks that connect to the outside section.Additionally, the research facility focuses on conservation and environmental health. The main animal the organization studies is coral. Lab workers help to plant coral on Florida’s coral reefs and test treatments for coral diseases.
