The hype for “A Minecraft Movie” was overwhelming in the weeks leading up to April 4, which was the movie’s release date. Clips of Jack Black saying things like “flint and steel” and “chicken jockey” attracted a lot of attention on social platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. I was not sure what to expect when I walked into the theatre, but as soon as the theatre lights dimmed and I saw the classic loading screen for the game, I knew this movie was going to be good.
The movie opens with Jack Black giving a quick backstory of his character, Steve, and how he got into Minecraft. This narration is where a majority of the viral clips stemmed from, which is a smart decision since a majority of the people watching the movie are under 25 and do not have an attention span over 15 seconds.
This movie was exactly what it should have been. It did not try to be serious like other video game adaptations that have come out in recent years, which plays in its favor because it is allowed to be overly silly at times. “A Minecraft Movie” still had a great plot that had me welling up at points especially at the reference to the now deceased content creator, Technoblade.
There is great romance in this movie, specifically between Jennifer Coolidge and a villager. This romance was the B-plot, and often provided comedic relief when things were getting serious in the A-Plot. This was a very unexpected plotline and it had me in my feelings every time it came on the screen.
I truly enjoyed this movie and I believe that the production quality and writing are on par with other greats such as “Interstellar” and “Whiplash.” I can see this movie winning several awards next February.
