Luigi Mangione, a man accused of assassinating United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is facing the death penalty.
Thompson, the United Healthcare CEO, was shot outside of a hotel on December 4 where he intended to have a business meeting. The killing led to a manhunt for Mangione, who was tracked down to a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. The police reported to have found Mangione in the possession of a fake ID, a passport, a ghost gun (which is an unserialized firearm that is put together from a kit or separate pieces) and a handwritten document that details his “motivation and mindset.”
The Department of Justice claims that Mangione’s assassination of Thompson was intended to ignite a debate about the healthcare industry. The department has announced its intention to execute Mangione, however the state of New York, where Mangione is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, does not have the death penalty.
Mangione is facing 11 charges in the state of New York, which include first-degree murder as well as terrorism. If he is found guilty of these charges on account of these charges, he would face a mandatory life sentence without a chance of parole.
