The popular language learning app, Duolingo, recently announced that their iconic mascot, Duo, has tragically passed.
On February 11, 2025, Duolingo announced Duo as deceased.
A statement on the Duolingo Instagram page stated, “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.” The beloved mascot was found on video to be hit with a cybertruck.
Fans of Duolingo were shocked by the sudden and unexpected news of the death. The owl had made a name for himself on social media, gaining millions of followers across all platforms.
Many have speculated as to why the mascot was killed. Some believe that the company killed him before a new app renovation, while others believe that the murderer had received one too many of the owl’s threatening notifications to save their streak.
While the specific motive is currently unknown, Duolingo, in an Instagram post, asked for kindness and patience, stating, “We are aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments.”
The company also stated, “If you feel inclined to share, please also include your credit card number, so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory.”
