On January 1st, a truck drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. The attack happened around 3:00 a.m. during a New Year’s celebration. Fourteen people were killed and about thirty were injured. The FBI investigated the event as an “act of terrorism” and was able to identify the attacker.
Additionally, this incident happened a day before the annual Sugar Bowl was supposed to take place. Despite this, the event was only delayed by one day and the New Orleans stadium was filled with fans. Bourbon Street was reopened before the game and the new barriers were set up on both sides. The attendees held a moment of silence and put up flowers for the people who had died because of the attack.
After the Sugar Bowl, residents of the city hoped that New Orleans would quickly recover due to its resilience. Jefferson County Sheriff Joseph Lopinto believes the city will become “one of the safest places in the country.”
