After the sex trafficking allegations against Matt Gaetz, he withdrew from consideration for the position of attorney general. President-elect Donald Trump has now named Pam Bondi as his pick for attorney general. The Florida attorney general has long been closely associated with Donald Trump and was involved in his legal team during the first impeachment trial.
Bondi was Florida’s first female attorney general and rose into the political scene relatively unknown. She held the position of Florida attorney general from 2011 to 2019 and worked to reduce human trafficking within the state. Additionally, during her service, she challenged aspects of Obama’s health care program and advocated for stricter immigration control through a “show me your papers” policy that reflected one being tested in Arizona at the time. Since leaving office, she has worked as a lobbyist for several major companies such as General Motors.
She has often leaned more conservative in her views, aligning herself with the MAGA movement and supporting Donald Trump during legal proceedings during the impeachment attempts and hush money trial. She has been vocal in her support for President-elect Trump, calling the cases against him corrupt. It is expected that she will support the republican agenda during these first few years of the Trump presidency, as she currently chairs the Center of Litigation and co-chairs the Center for Law and Justice at the America First Policy Institute. The America First Policy Institute is a conservative think tank that worked to develop the policy for a second Trump term.
