Not every student wants to play on a sports team. For those who want to compete, but want something with less contact, a debate team might be a good choice. A debate team is a group of people competing against each other to prove their claim in a debate. If one is passionate about a topic and wants to express that in a competitive matter, then a debate team would be a perfect match for them.
Mt. Vernon offers many clubs, from ASL Club to Trap Club. Yet the school does not have a debate team. People love to prove that their opinion is the right one, which is why we need a debate team. People will be interested if they can argue logically. Mt. Vernon could compete against other schools with a debate team.
A debate team will also improve students’ teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills. Students will have to form a strategy and how to form a rebuttal against another claim. Speaking of teammates, with a debate team, students will have to work with others to make their arguments known. With that, the teammates will help their leader adjust their words to strengthen their argument.
Now that we have a debate class, the team would be a great way for students to learn how to professionally state their claims and still be competitive.

Hey I am Cara Harrod! I don’t just write for the school’s newspaper but also during my free time. Reading and writing are what I mostly do in my free time. During winter I am on the volleyball court and in the spring I am on the track. But when I am home I make my own jewelry and taking old clothes to make new ones.
