Ashfall Trilogy Review

Gabe Rentfrow, MVC writer

The book “Ashfall,” is part of a post-apocalyptic series by Mike Mullin. It is a multi-award, post-apocalyptic book set in Iowa in the year 2012.

The book starts out in Iowa with the main character, Alex, home alone when the super volcano under Yellowstone erupts. This eruption then starts a chain of dangerous events including cannibalism, illegal government affairs, and wars.

This book has been given several awards, including being One of the Top Five Young Adult Novels of 2011 by National Public Radio, Best Teen Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews, and a New Voices selection by the American Booksellers Association.

I found the book to be very interesting; the book was a near perfect mix of comedy, action, suspense, romance and mystery. The book held my attention, and I did not want to put it down until I had finished it.

Mike Mulin, the author, has written four other books. “Surface Tension,” a murder and domestic terrorism book, two sequels to “Ashfall,” “Ashen Winter” and “Sunrise” and “Darla’s Story,”a book to explain one of the characters in the Ashfall trilogy’s backstory.

In total, the book is an excellent read; while it has not gained as much popularity as other books set in a post apocalyptic world such as “The Hunger Games” and “The Maze Runner,”  it is still an excellent book, with brilliant displays of comedy in what otherwise would have been a depressing post apocalyptic world.
