End of government shutdown

Grant Hess, MVC Staff Wrtier

The government shutdown has come to an end, for now. Not to say that it will not pick up again, because that is what it looks like will happen. For now the problem seems to be resolved.

Seems like a good thing to me, but then again, some loud groups on the right seems to be upset with Trump for an insignificant and perceived cave. He didn’t cave-in, on the contrary, he set a firm deadline where he has to get funding for the wall by February 15th or the government goes back into a shutdown. To me, this seems like a game of 6D chess.

The other alternative is that he declares a national emergency and then gets the funding for his wall by taking it out of the military budget. To me that seems like a good plan. He can’t just let the people go without pay, and he can’t just not build the wall without a mandate or money. Many people expect a new shutdown.

Ben Labelle, 12, said, “Nothing is going to happen. They won’t be able to compromise, thus making the whole thing an exercise in futility.”

To be honest, this shutdown seemed like it took a longer time than it did, which was 35 days. In retrospect, maybe it was just because the last month droned on and on.  That is beside point, the government is open and people eagerly await the next step in this process of repetitiveness which our democracy seems to have devolved into.
