3 Carrots, 5 stars

Located just a few blocks away from Monument Circle in the historical city market of Fountain Square is Three Carrots, a restaurant that specializes in vegetarian and vegan cuisines.

The food stand-turned-restaurant built a permanent set up just last summer and has already made quite a name for itself.

Prior to upgrading from food stand status, Three Carrots’ menu primarily revolved around sandwiches, soups, and salads. However, nowadays, customers can expect to find brunch, beer, wine, smoothies, fresh-pressed juices, coffee service, and dozens of desserts. On top of that, meatless and mashed potatoes meals such as macaroni and cheese or country-fried “chicken” with mashed potatoes and gravy are offered at certain times.

The many options are all reasonably priced and scream “Yummy vegan comfort food goodness.” After looking the menu over for quite some time, I decided to ask for a recommendation.

According to owner, Ian Phillips, one of the spot’s most popular dishes is the seitan gyro. Just as satisfying as any meat-inclusive gyro, the meal is presented as a vibrant mix of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers over garlic and herb-seasoned shredded seitan, all drizzled with tangy cucumber dressing on a toasted pita. For all the non-experts on veganism out there, seitan is fancy terminology for wheat “meat.” It is an excellent source of plant-powered protein and is made fresh at Three Carrots every day.

After ordering one of these meatless miracles, I admired the colorful, whimsical interior. Between the curvy lettering on the chalkboard menu, and the cartoon veggies plastered every which way, the atmosphere is almost as cheery as the staff.

My gawking was cut short by the speedy service of a friendly waiter. Nearly drooling, I could hardly wait to take that first bite. Upon doing so, I was met with an explosive combination of fresh flavors and textures. Seasoned to perfection, the taste was almost as diverse as the colorful presentation.

After my failed attempt at savoring my meal, I thanked the few employees on staff and headed back out to the chilly downtown sidewalk. Despite the large meal, I felt surprisingly light and energized. That’s definitely a feeling I can get used to. Three Carrots has definitely earned a spot on my favorites list.

Three Carrots slogan is “Vegetarian cuisine from the heart (land).” Beyond that, it is all good for the heart. If you ask me, it is also good on the tastebuds.
