Kehlani’s new release lives up to its name

Kehlani released her second album, “SweetSexySavage,” on January 27, 2017.

This album showcases her signature R&B pop style, with bubbly, infectious rhythms track after track. Kehlani’s brilliant lyrics also shine through, as she had a hand in writing every song on the album. The one exception, the sole non-musical track on the album, “Intro,” was written and recited by poet Reyna Biddy specifically for Kehlani.

As someone who does not usually listen to R&B music, I really enjoyed “SweetSexySavage.” A few of my personal favorites from the album are “CRZY” and “Do U Dirty.”

I love how Kehlani channels electric energy into her music without sacrificing the toned-down, chill vibes that are characteristic of R&B music. She takes the best parts of the genre and transforms them into her own style.

One thing that surprised me about the album was the occasional use of guitar. At first I did not really think that it fit, but it grew on me, and only added to the unique feel of Kehlani’s music.

I would recommend this album to anyone, beyond fans of Kehlani or R&B in general. “SweetSexySavage” brought something new to the table for me, and I think it could for many others as well.
