Phonk music came out of nowhere in the past three years, at least for me. But this genre has been around as early as the 1990’s. My discovery of the genre and its origins was a crazy ride.
I learned phonk music from a friend of mine. I started listening to it and vividly remember the first song that got me interested: “A Life in Rio” by BRAZILIAN PHONK. After that I fell into the rabbit hole. The sounds are very unique, with some songs being a fast paced beat and others having a dangerous, slow bass feel to them. The main topic of phonk music, though, is where it came from.
Phonk music became popular in southern U.S.A. in the 1990’s, specifically in Houston and Memphis. Some artists who inspired this genre are DJ Screw, X-raided, and DJ Squeeky, though there are many more.
I consider Phonk as a gym music genre. This type of music is meant to get blood pumping or give strength for the next set, which is why phonk falls into the category. Phonk music is also good for studying and doing tasks; with the right sounds, someone can focus on whatever needs to get done.
Phonk music is not only just a vibe; to me it is a new emotion. Phonk music changed me and I believe any others who listen to it will say the same.
