Everyone wants to be healthy yet few people want to spend hours working out. A surge workout is the perfect solution, as one gets the benefits of working out without having to put hours in at the gym.
A surge workout is a type of workout that includes a few minutes of intense exercise directly followed by a few minutes of light exercise. The type of exercise can be weight lifting, sprints or hills and even just walking faster and pumping your legs for a few minutes during an everyday walk. A surge workout is bursts of intense workout that raises the heart rate directly followed by moments of rest that allow the heart rate to return to normal.
Surging is an effective workout style because the body keeps burning calories even after the workout is completed. In a normal workout, cortisol, stress hormones, endorphins and human growth hormones are affected during the workout but go back to normal once it is over. In a surge workout, testosterone, human growth hormones and endorphins stay up, and the body’s cortisol stays down for up to 48 hours after completing the surge workout. The body is still burning calories during this time as well.
Mt. Vernon’s gym teachers, Mr. Deardorff and Mrs. Stindle, teach their students about the benefits of surge workouts and encourage them to practice exercising outside of gym class.
According to Mr. Deardorff, surge workouts are important because they, “give [students] options in the future where they can workout and understand the benefit of a workout. Many times they may not have 45 minutes for a workout. A surge workout is a 10 to 15 minute workout and is still in fat burning and muscle building mode for the next 24 to 48 hours.”
Surge workouts have the support of science, as well as professionals. It is a great workout for beginners and will only take a few minutes to begin today. Shape and TruBalance are two good places for students interested in learning more about the benefits of surge workouts.
