Is school lunch good? As someone who goes between eating the school lunch and bringing my own, the answer is: sometimes.
I know that not everyone agrees with that claim, and a lot of students would say school lunch is really bad, but I still see most of those students eating it everyday. I know some students that bring their lunch still choose to get a hot meal as well. While there are things in some of the school lunches that I personally do not like, my personal preference does not dictate the worth of the food.
Even if the lunch is not perfect, the value of being served a hot and nutritious meal every single day cannot be understated. School lunch is also the only option for a hot meal, beginning food from home will either be cold or room temperature. A lot of kids rely on school lunches being an important source of nutrition because they may not be able to afford healthy and hot meals at home.
In my opinion, for those not financially struggling, if you really hate the food that much, do not eat it. I would much rather people bring their own food than complain about how gross the hot meal made for them is.
If I could change anything about the menu I would make it more like the middle school lunch back when they had many different options for the students. They could offer both the chicken sandwiches and the burgers everyday. I am sure that if the school offered more options than students would be much happier. Before COVID-19 hit, the high school had a line dedicated to each different lunch option everyday.
Another thing that I hear a lot of people complain about is that the food is too expensive, but the school really cannot lower the prices, as the ingredients get more expensive every year and more families are unable to pay. The overall price of groceries around the country is also a reason students have begun to rely on school lunch.
I believe that the school lunch is underappreciated and that more students should appreciate things like a hot meal everyday.
