Being a teenager in today’s world can be challenging. Many struggle with depression and anxiety. These mental health challenges lead to habits that people believe make them happier, such as scrolling on TikTok or playing a favorite video game. In actuality, this only increases stress. Another downside that is not as commonly discussed is the increased sedentary behavior.
While resting and getting good sleep is essential, sitting still for too long can lead to significant health issues such as
diabetes and hyperlipidemia, having so much fat that it leaks into the bloodstream. Being sedentary for excessive amounts can also contribute to cardiovascular conditions which are the leading cause of death in the world today. However, according to the National Library of Medicine, the answer to these issues may be as simple as taking a walk. Studies have shown that aerobic exercises such as walking, gardening, and dancing can all help relieve that nagging stress and anxiety.
One hypothesis for how stress relief works is that the increased blood flow and the activity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal glands together stimulate other parts of the brain. These include the centers for mood and motivation, also known as the limbic system, and the regulation of fear from stress, which happens in the amygdala.
Another possible explanation is that exercise serves as a distraction that can break a person out of a depressive cycle of thoughts. Although getting up and working out may seem difficult, it does not have to be much. Just a five to ten minute walk can help.
So maybe do not pick up the phone next time when feeling stressed or anxious; instead, take a walk.
