“The Grey Man” series by Mark Greany is a New York Times bestseller, and is a great read for anyone interested in military thrillers. Mark Greany has written 13 books in the series: “The Grey Man,” “On Target,” “Ballistic,” “Dead Eye,” “Back Blast,” “Gunmetal Gray,” “Agent in Place,” “Mission Critical,” “One Minute Out,” “Relentless,” “Sierra Six,” “Burner, “ and “The Chaos Agent.”
This series revolves around Courtland Gentry and his life as a CIA agent, freelance assassin, and rebel assassin all over the world. Each book generally takes me around five to six hours to read, as the books are 400-500 pages, making it a lengthy process.
I really enjoyed reading the series due to multiple factors. First, the main character, Court, is never given major plot armor. Yes, he is an advanced combat assassin and is much more skilled than most of his opponents, but generally he doesn´t get into a fight like a movie character running into each battle head first. He always carefully plans each step, while the author wrote in military tactics to give readers an explanation of what is going on.
Second, he doesn’t win every fight. In every book, he gets injured at some point and needs help from other characters, and even in some points he does not do any fighting for weeks in the book.
Third, the author made sure to show how Court changes over the series, while starting as a freelance assassin without any care for people, I saw him form many bonds, also his actions and choices change from being self-centered to centered around other people’s survival.
