On Friday, August 18, 2023, the Mt. Vernon football team went head to head against the Noblesville Millers at the renowned Lucas Oil Stadium. Each team traveled with their respective marching band to play during halftime, where Noblesville performed their show “The White Crow,” and Mt. Vernon performed their show “mozARTrageous.”
The Marauders started off strong in the first quarter by scoring the first few points of the game. However, the Millers soon retaliated, and swept the scoreboard with over 40 points. Despite being down for most of the third quarter, the MV student section along with the marching band cheered and played pep songs to provide support and inspiration for the players. After a valiant effort from the football team, the final score settled at 48-30 in Noblesville’s favor.
It had been about two years since the football team last competed, and about four years since the Band of Marauders last performed, on this stadium’s turf. The students of Mt. Vernon were extremely thankful for the opportunity to have played in this highly revered setting, because the expectations are known to be high. Along with this, it is known for being one of the hardest fields for a band to play on due to the echoes on the enclosed ceiling, making the sound slightly distorted while performing.
Katie Deuser, a senior flutist, said that the most memorable part for her was, “sharing the experience with all of my favorite people, and the idea of getting to start and end the season in Lucas Oil.”
Max Davis, a sophomore on the varsity football team, said his favorite moment in the game was during the first quarter when Noblesville fumbled what otherwise would have been a touchdown – a near save for Mt. Vernon.
It was a very exhilarating experience for participants of all classes and activities.
Hopefully, by the end of the season, Mt. Vernon’s football team and marching band will both earn another chance to play in the legendary Lucas Oil Stadium.
