Phoebe Bridgers is an American singer-songwriter, whose songs best fit the genres of
indie and folk music. She is known both as an independent singer and by her band, ¨Boygenius.¨ While most people have heard her popular single ¨Motion Sickness,¨ which came out in 2017 on the album ¨Stranger in the Alps,¨ not many people know her background and how she got a start in her career.
Phoebe Lucille Bridgers was born on August 17th, 1994 in Pasadena, California. Her mother,
Jaime, was a real estate agent and stand-up comedian, while her father, Tony, was a set builder for TV shows. She has one younger brother named Jackson.
At age 13, she learned the guitar and started playing it as a street performer at her local farmers
Market. In 2009, Bridgers graduated from the Sequoyah School, a non-profit, private middle school, and started studying jazz at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. In high school, she joined a few bands and played in LA as a solo musician. After high school, Bridgers was accepted to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, but dropped out soon after.
Tony Berg, a music producer, became friends with Bridgers and offered to help her with her first
album for free. She was not signed to a label at this time, so she had creative freedom with her album, ¨Stranger in the Alps.¨ She signed to an independent label, Dead Oceans, in the summer of 2017. That following September, she officially released ¨Stranger in the Alps.¨ Bridgers also met the singer-songwriter Ryan Adams around this time, who helped her put out her EP ¨KIller.¨
Bridgers has collaborated with a lot of big names, such as the 1975, Manchester Orchestra, Kid
Cudi and Taylor Swift. She teamed up with her friends Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus to form a group called ¨Boygenius¨ in 2018. The band released three singles and an EP the following fall. In January 2019, Bridgers announced another band with Connor Oberst on ¨The Late Show with Stephen Cobert¨ called ¨Better Oblivion Community Center.¨ Later that month, the band released their first album. She has been described as a ¨Serial Collaborator¨” because of her many collaborations with other artists.
At the beginning of 2020, Bridgers announced that her album “Punisher” was finished and would be released later in the year. In February, Bridgers released “Garden Song,” a single, with its music video and another single, ¨Kyoto,¨ following soon after. After releasing the full album in June, Bridgers went on to get four Grammy nominations. ¨Punisher’s¨ sister EP, ¨Copycat Killer,¨ came out in November of 2020, followed by a Christmas album, ¨If We Make It Through December,¨ featuring four covers of holiday songs.
In November 0f 2021, Bridgers was featured in ¨Red (Taylor´s Version)¨ and their song titled
¨Nothing New¨ became her highest-peaking entry on the ¨Billboard Top 100¨ at #43. On December 15 that year, Bridgers was a guest on the true-crime comedy podcast ¨My Favorite Murder.¨ The following August, Bridgers was announced to be starring in an A24 horror movie called ¨I Saw the TV Glow.¨ She was also an opening number for Taylor Swift’s ¨The Eras Tour.¨ More recently, Bridgers and her band, ¨Boygenius,¨ announced their debut album called ¨The Record,¨ which was released on March 31, 2023.
