Dragonball Super: Super Hero Review
September 27, 2022
I recently went to see “Dragonball Super: Super Hero,” another amazing installment of the Dragonball franchise. This movie was incredible and packed with some new characters, and a few returning ones as well. I loved this movie and I cannot wait to watch it again.
This movie was directed by Tetsuro Kodama and made $79 million dollars worldwide. It only just recently came to the U.S. on August 19th. With only 1 hour and 40 minutes of screen time, it sure does give watchers a great story to enjoy in a short time.
The “Red Ribbon Army,” a villain organization of the Dragonball (DB) series, makes a comeback for this film and attempts to take over the Earth. Our main heroes, Goku and Vegeta, are off-world training. This leaves one of our heroes “Piccolo” and the son of “Goku,” Gohan,” to fend for Earth.
Since Gohan and Piccolo are two of my favorite characters of DB, I loved this movie way more than I would have thought. Gohan and Piccolo have just been sitting around in the Dragonball universe. The movie gave Gohan and Piccolo the revamp they deserved. Down to powers and abilities, and even backstory, I loved that they shined some light on this great duo. I also get to see how much of a father Piccolo is to Gohan.
Surprisingly, the animation was good as well. Toei Animation, the animators, decided to make this movie entirely out of 3D models and CGI. Now at first, I did not like this at all. It was risky and other animation projects like this were never taken seriously. But the models and the effects they used just blew my mind. When fights happen in the movie it got me hyped and it was so cool to see how much camera work can be used when it is all 3D.
Overall, “Dragonball Super: Super Hero” is a great film, and after its predecessor, “Dragonball Super: Broly,” I can happily say that I look forward to another Dragonball movie with amazing animation, incredible storytelling, and adventures with my favorite characters.
