Social media pros and cons
April 12, 2022
Social media is the addictive platform that assumes control of teenagers’ minds. Teens all around the world are blasted in the face with electronics and access to social media. The distinction among each platform is littered with messages, posts, and videos.
Social media is widely used by teenagers and adults. According to scientists at the University of Minnesota, Youtube, Instagram, and Snapchat are the most commonly used by teenagers. They use these to stay updated and keep social. Many adults, ages 24-35 stay within the borders of Facebook. According to Statista, 58.3% or almost 60 million people are on this platform. Facebook was originally used for college students only, but it has spread worldwide and it is also used as a marketing tool. Companies use this platform to stay in touch and spread information.
On the other hand, social media is filled with negative aspects such as easy access to personal information, bullying, and stalking. Platforms like Facebook have areas where users can give detailed information about themselves like their alma mater and where they live. Having all of this information available online can lead to stalking. This information is easy for stalkers to get. They can use this information against users or lead users to paranoia and fear.
Just like stalking, bullying is a big problem society is faced with, specifically teens. Bullying is easier over a screen instead of face-to-face because they can stay anonymous and don’t have to worry about a forward reaction.
Despite its many issues, social media doesn’t seem to be going away. New apps are always being introduced and updated. American society seems to be attached to the ups and downs of social media.
