“Demon Slayer” Review

Graci Watson, MVC Writer

Me and my friend Drew started watching “Demon Slayer” a few days ago and finished it already. Drew had already watched all of it, but wanted to watch it again with me. There are currently two seasons and a movie. The correct order to watch it is season one, the movie, and then the second season.

The main character is Tanjiro who is training to become a demon slayer. He has a very good sense of smell, so he is able to sniff out exactly where the demons are. His whole family, except for his sister Nezuko, were killed by demons. Nezuko was bitten by a demon and therefore became half demon. However, Nezuko was put under a trance to believe that all humans are her family and to protect them.

One of my favorite characters is Zenitsu. He is a crybaby and is scared of basically everything, which is not the best trait for a demon slayer. He has super hearing and can actually hear the blood circulating in everyone’s bodies. Since Zenitsu is scared of demons, when he has to fight one, he passes out. However, when he is out cold, his body takes over and he is like a completely different character. He effortlessly kills all demons in his sleep, then when he wakes up, he forgets what happened.

The other main character that I like is Inosuke. Inosuke is a very tough character. He always wants to fight everyone and everything. Despite his aggressive nature, he has a very feminine face. He hides his face with a boar mask since he was raised by wild boars. He never encountered a human until he met Tanjiro and Zenitsu. It is pretty funny to see how he reacts and adapts to things that seem normal to the other characters.

The plot of the show is Tanjiro trying to become more powerful and defeat the head demon, Muzan Kibutsuji. Season one is mainly just learning about the characters and seeing some battles against demons. This show is really well-animated  and the battle scenes are the best I have ever seen in an anime.

The show does have very sad and heart-wrenching moments. When some of the demons die, the viewer gets to see what they went through as a human and what they have to go through as a demon. The most heart shattering moment in season one for me, would be Rui’s backstory. I normally do not cry when I watch shows, but I did this time. I do not want to spoil it, but it is a great moment.

Drew and I also watched the Demon Slayer movie. The movie is beautiful. The main plot is Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Nezuko, and Rengoku have to defeat a demon who is holding 200 people captive on a moving train. Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko are all on board when they realize that their superior Rengoku is on the mission with them. Rengoku is a flame hashira, which is basically just a very highly ranked demon slayer.  Again, no spoilers, but watching this movie resulted in me crying the hardest I think I have cried in years.

I highly recommend this anime and movie to everyone. For anyone who has never watched an anime, this would be a great starting place. The characters are unique, the plot is entertaining, and they have heart shattering moments. I would rate this anime an 11/10. It is perfect and I have never cried over a show so much in my life. It is just amazing.
