Hanukkah is celebrated because in 2 B.C. the Maccabees or Jewish warriors got control back of Jerusalem and the Second Temple of Jerusalem from the Greeks after a horrible revolt. They believed they only had enough oil for one night to light the temple, but a miracle occured allowing the oil to survive for 8 nights.
