MV choirs earn Gold ratings at ISSMA
More stories from Joan Lee
On April 13, Mt. Vernon High School choirs went to the Indiana State School Music Association’s Large Group Festival. At ISSMA, choral director Ms. Anderson and all MV choirs were evaluated on music performance activities. The choirs sang the choral music they have learned and were judged for the quality of their performances.
All choirs earned Gold ratings in both performance and sight singing, which is being able to sing music right off the sheet music.
“I think ISSMA went well,” said Dustin Meek, 9, “and I feel that each choir had done well because we all got Gold.”
Chamber Singers earned near perfect scores from all judges on their performance, which is very difficult to achieve at ISSMA.
Women’s Choir was challenged by a German piece, where they had to learn the pronunciation, in addition to performing it.
MV Singers performed “Laus Deo,” an energetic, Latin song. The students had to learn Latin in a fairly short period of time, but clearly learned it well considering they got a Gold rating.
The “Men of Mt. Vernon” Men’s Choir did not know what to expect at ISSMA, especially since this was their first year at ISSMA and sophomores had to miss the entire week before the event for ISTEP testing. However, they received high marks from the judges and earned a Gold in sight reading.
Congrats to all MV choirs.
